Inside The Highgate Manor
The Highgate Manor: A Storied Treasure Reawakens in Vermont
Tucked in the heart of Highgate, Vermont, stands a structure that has witnessed centuries of stories, transformation, and mystery—The Highgate Manor. Once a bustling hub of local history and legend, this grand Victorian estate is now reopened to the public, inviting guests to step back in time and experience its magic firsthand.
Built in the 1800s, The Highgate Manor was once the centerpiece of town life. Over the years, it served many roles—from the home and office of the famed Dr. Henry Baxter, to a rumored hideaway during Prohibition, to a lavish private residence. Today, after careful preservation efforts, the Manor once again opens its doors, honoring its past while embracing a new future.
What Awaits Inside
Walking into The Highgate Manor is like entering another era. Visitors are greeted by original hardwood flooring, beautifully preserved chimneys, and period-specific details that speak to the craftsmanship of the 19th century. The house spans four floors, including a basement, and a stunning ballroom that now hosts weddings, performances, and other events.
The Manor features seven bedrooms, each with unique antique furnishings and views of the surrounding countryside. The Floral Parlor, a delicate room filled with blooms, lace, and soft pink accents, offers a space for reading or quiet conversation. Just beyond it, another parlor features deeper tones, rich wood, and a more masculine design—a cozy place for fireside chats or games. This room is also filled with books, historic documents, a school bell from the time the Manor served as a school house (due to overcrowding in the schools), medicine bottles and signs from Dr. Baxter’s practice, and several more tokens from years past.
One of the most intriguing rooms is Dr. Baxter’s Office, still holding echoes of its former purpose. This space gives visitors a glimpse into the daily life of the town’s most prominent physician.
Outside, guests can enjoy the historic gazebo nestled on the Manor’s lush grounds, perfect for photo ops or peaceful reflection.
Every inch of The Highgate Manor was created with intention. The layout and aesthetic reflect Victorian sensibilities—symmetry, ornamental woodwork, high ceilings, and layered textures meant to impress and inspire. The dual parlors speak to the culture of hospitality and conversation, while the ballroom showcases a time when social gatherings and dances were central to community life.
The Manor’s architecture and décor also honor the tension between opulence and restraint—a hallmark of rural Victorian homes.
